The rumours are true. Miley Cyrus will be starring in an episode of "Black Mirror". Photo: Netflix

Netflix’s Black Mirror, a sci-fi anthology series which explores a twisted, high-tech near-future where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide, is coming back to bend our brains. We last had a taste of contemporary techno-paranoia with the interactive Bandersnatch back in December 2018, the episode about a young programmer who starts to question reality when he adopts a mad writer’s fantasy novel into a video game. It explored an experimental but highly impressive and seamless technical integration which allowed viewers to make “decisions” on how the story would go moving forward.

Come June, Black Mirror will once again suck you into the world of dystopian darkness with three new episodes: Smithereens, Striking Vipers, and the mysteriously titled Episode #5.3. The fast flashing text in the trailer reads, “Netflix invites you to experience three new stories from the award-winning series that changed how you see technology, the future, the world, each other, love, privacy, connection, sex, family, work, afterlife.”

As per usual, the trailer didn’t give away any of the new episodes’ storylines or twists, but it did give us a peek at the impressive cast. Among the familiar faces featured are Anthony Mackie and Pom Klementieff of Avengers: Endgame fame, Miley Cyrus (yes, you best believe it), Topher Grace of Spider-Man 3 fame, Damson Idris, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II aka Black Manta in Aquaman.

From what we gather, Miley Cyrus stars as a hugely popular internet pop star (surprise, surprise) while Anthony Mackie takes on the role of a struggling family man. We also got a glimpse of a young schoolgirl confiding in a robot which, in Black Mirror world, means it could potentially be the very thing that destroys her soul.

We’re excited already.

Created and written by Charlie Brooker, season five of Black Mirror will be back on 5 June to creep you out.
