High profile Korean star couple Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo are apparently filing for a divorce two years after their much-celebrated marriage. A law firm representing 33-year-old Song Joong Ki filed for court mediation for his divorce from 37-year-old Song Hye Kyo with the Seoul Family Court.

The couple, known to Korean entertainment fans as the “Song-Song Couple”, met through the top-rated hit drama series Descendants of the Sun in 2016 and tied the knot in October 2017. Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo played the sizzling characters of Captain Yoo Si Jin and Dr Kang Mo Yeon respectively. The drama catapulted them to superstardom and for years, they were one of the most highly sought after actors in South Korea.

Song Joong Ki released an official statement for his fans through his lawyer which read, “Hello. This is Song Joong Ki. First, I’d like to apologise for delivering this unfortunate news to the many fans who love and care for me. I have begun the process of filing for divorce from Song Hye Kyo. Rather than denouncing one another and arguing over who is to blame, I hope that the divorce process can be wrapped up amicably.”

“I ask for your understanding in regards to the fact that it is difficult to discuss the details of my personal life, and I will recover from my current wounds and do my utmost as an actor to repay you through great productions in the future. Thank you,” the actor added.

The couple tied the knot on 31 October 2017 in an intimate outdoor ceremony at Yeong Bin Gwan, a Korean-style banquet annexe to The Shilla hotel in Seoul, South Korea. A few months ago, divorce rumours surfaced when Song Hye Kyo was spotted without her wedding ring. Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo have also reportedly moved out of their newlywed house.

Meanwhile, Song Hye Kyo has released a statement regarding her divorce from Song Joong Ki. The actress revealed the two decided to go separate ways due to personality differences. Through her agency UAA, she explained, ” Hello, this is Song Hye Kyo’s agency UAA. First, we are sorry to greet everyone with bad news. Our actress, Song Hye Kyo, is currently divorcing her husband after careful consideration between the two.”

“The reason was because of their differences in personality. The two were unable to overcome their differences, which led to this decision. We politely ask for your understanding as we cannot confirm more details because it is both of the actors’ private lives. Also, we ask that you please refrain from leaving provocative or speculative comments on the matter. We are sorry to cause worry. We will try our best to greet you all with a better side in the future. Thank you,” UAA added.
