High-end Italian clothing retailer Golden Goose is selling a pair of banged up looking sneakers, complete with adhesive tape, scuffed outsole, worn laces and general grubby exterior.
Newsflash, Golden Goose – give me a couple months and I could do this myself. Organically, and for free.
Understandably, Golden Goose has copped quite a bit of flack for selling these shoes for an exorbitant US$530, with many saying that Golden Goose (and Nordstrom) are ‘glorifying’ and making a mockery of poverty.
there are people in the world wearing plastic bags as shoes because they can’t afford any but these HIDEOUS things are selling for $500 the fashion industry is truly so fucking stupid it pisses me off like what the actual hell ??????! https://t.co/8kOB37zyMJ

If you have $530 to buy these, give the $ to a homeless person for their shoes instead. They got real use for that money. As someone whos been homeless twice and has traumas of buying new clothes even now, this shit is insulting and insensitive. 🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽#goldengoose https://t.co/imqHkBXOjv

You see what #Balenciaga started… this homeless fashion.. but where’s the hardship prices at? How are you going to exploit the homeless but charge $530! I have questions for the type of ppl buying into this fashion.. #ThursdayThoughts #GoldenGoose #poverty #wtf pic.twitter.com/OXYTB1hq2q

We don’t have an issue with high price tags if the price tag is justified, but we don’t want to be parting with our hard-earned cash for something that we could conceivably pick up from the side of the road.
So what does $530 buy you when it comes to these shoes, anyway?
You’ll get a calf-suede upper, ‘hot application of coloured tape’ (whatever that means), ‘laces intentionally worn’ and an openwork star.
Why couldn’t they have just stopped at ‘calf-suede upper’?
For some though, all this hubbub around these shoes wasn’t a big deal, and paying $530 for a pair of beat up sneaks was nothing to get in a tizzy over.
I honestly don’t know why everyone is making a big deal about #GoldenGoose making these shoes that “glorify poverty” and selling them so highly priced when #KanyeWest has been doing this for fucking years!!! Tell me I’m mf wrong! pic.twitter.com/c3vqt90lqW

Why are people losing their shit over these #GoldenGoose “distressed” shoes selling for $530.. how TF is this “mocking” poverty?
Why do y’all care SO much what others spend THEIR OWN money on especially these hideous shoes?
Imagine letting this shit bother you 🙃 #WhoCares pic.twitter.com/7Qx9KHD47c

And others were able to see the humour in the situation, even if they couldn’t afford the shoes.
I’m bang on trend it seems. Cheap shoes + walking everywhere since I can’t afford much more and like… need food. I’ll do you a deal #goldengoose you can have my custom designed, authentically battered nasty (but comfy af) shoes for £200 a pair – whatta steal 👌 pic.twitter.com/wvU4P0IONa
