Malaysia Bags First Gold for Synchronised Diving

Malaysian divers Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong are clearly a force to be reckoned with. The pair won Malaysia’s first-ever synchronised diving gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games yesterday evening.

Competing in the Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform event in Gold Coast, Pandelela and Jun Hoong scored 328.08 points to secure the gold, far ahead of Canada’s 312.12 points (Meaghan Benfeito and Caeli McKay).

Malaysia’s Leong Mun Yee and Nur Dhabitah Sabri also pushed the country up the medal tally with two bronze medals on the same day– one in the same 10m platform event and another from the Women’s Synchronised 3m Springboard on Wednesday morning.

Malaysia currently ranks 12th on the Commonwealth medal tally with three golds, three silvers and five bronzes.

This isn’t Pandelela and Jun Hoong’s first time on the winner’s podium together. One of their most notable wins is the silver medal they won at the 2016 Rio Olympics for the same event – another first for Malaysia’s diving squad. Pandelela also scored the gold medal for the 10m platform at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
