It’s like a death in the family. Every one of these characters are beloved by fans who would have watched their family antics over the last nine years and related them to their own.

Surely it would be difficult to see anyone of them go, even Lily. The bombshell was dropped recently by Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd.

“We’re handling some bigger life events in this season,” Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly.

“We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it,” he added.

But who will it be?

Lloyd said it’s a “significant character on the series … [the death] will be a moving event and an event that has repercussions across several episodes.”

The show, which first premiered in 2009, stars Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Sarah Hyland, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons and Jeremy Maguire.

Here’s what we do know. The upcoming season is the last for the sitcom. Julie Bowen who plays Claire Dunphy confirmed this in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I was told it was [the final season],” she said. “We’re all under contract. We’re done. We finish up now,” she said.

Bowen also said that they are currently shooting episode 5 or 6 and no one has been ‘killed off’. Yet.
