While travelling to exotic countries remains elusive, a taste of Nicaragua, India, Indonesia, Colombia and Ethiopia is now at hand, straight from farm to cup. The Master Origins range from Nespresso handpicked coffee from these five countries to bring you a wonderful selection of coffees from around the world. Using each country’s unique agricultural environment, Nespresso created a diverse range of flavours; from the woody, rich and spicy Master Origin India to the more fruity and smooth Colombia flavour. Both Master Origin Indonesia and Ethiopia are rich and aromatic with the Ethiopian flavour being the lightest coffee in the range.
The agricultural sector in Nicaragua, is an important contributor to the tiny Central American nation’s economic well-being. And whilst investment in agriculture needs to take into consideration volcanic activity given the country’s location, ironically it is the minerals that occur naturally in volcanic ash that makes the soil rich and fertile.
Innovation and Craftsmanship From La Cumplida Region in Nicaragua
Master Origin Nicaragua La Cumplida Refinada is the first seasonal coffee from Nicaragua that features a distinctive aroma all thanks to Nespresso’s collaboration with micro farmers to keep traditional coffee craftsmanship alive. The Master Origin Nicaragua uses the Arabica coffee bean and the coffee gets its sweetness from the rare fermentation process. This laborious process requires master farmers to meticulously monitor the process to bring out a smooth brew paired with sweet cereal notes, whilst the Nicaragua La Cumplida Refinada uses a yeast fermentation technique that brings out smooth notes of candied cherry and pomegranate.
The fermentation stage is when the coffee unveils its true flavour and aroma and the conditions a coffee farmer chooses to ferment the coffee is essential for its taste. The unique fermentation process was what attracted Nespresso to Nicaragua. Nespresso’s coffee experts worked collaboratively with local farmers in the La Cumplida region to perform numerous trials to make improvements to the fermentation process. For instance, ripe coffee cherries were sprayed with natural yeast and allowed to ferment for 72 hours, unlocking wild fruity notes. The coffee was then dried for 2-3 weeks under strict monitoring of temperature and time to reveal its distinctive aromas.
Nicaragua has an exceptional climate and growing conditions where local farmers grow their coffee on micro plots and produce small quantities of coffee. Their passion, dedication and traditional craftsmanship are a key ingredient for this high-quality cup of Nicaraguan coffee.
