If you’ve been looking at your next travel destination once countries’ borders open, this Belgian safari park with the option of stays might be a place that would take the family too because you can see the animals up close and personal, right in the comfort of your own room. You probably have never had a walrus swim up to your hotel room window, but Pairi Daiza resort is the one place where that can happen.

Six Arctic-themed rooms at Pairi Daiza have been given underwater windows onto the world of the walrus, and the giant sea mammals can swim up to say hello. “The first customers who came were like, ‘Wow, that’s beautiful’,” said the zoo’s technical director, Jeremy Lannoy. “They leave with stars in their eyes, because experiences like this, there aren’t that many elsewhere in the world.”

Rooms come with a 10-centimetre thick window that can withstand huge water pressure or the charge of a tusked beast that can eventually grow up to two tonnes. The two younger walruses at the park don’t seem aggressive, however. If anything, they are intrigued by their human neighbours.

“There is no chance you’re disturbing the animal because its territory is so big anyway, and it has access to the inside and outside,” said park spokeswoman Claire Glissen. “Sometimes the walrus goes up to the window and is interested in who is in the room. But it also happens that he’s not interested. It depends on his state of mind. But it’s true that in this interaction between animals and humans, sometimes we don’t know who is the attraction.”

Of course, walruses aren’t the only creature at the park. If you’re looking to check out other animals, Pairi Daiza has other themed rooms too. There is a Full Moon Lodge with the chance to view large animals such as bears and wolves; Polar Bear House where you can have the company of polar bears right from your room; Tiger House for a chance of a close encounter with the majestic felines and Paddling Bear Hotel, where you will have a breathtaking view of the lake and its inhabitants, Steller sea lions.
