The black actor social media had hoped for to star in the mysterious upcoming instalment of the 55-year-old James Bond franchise is not Marvel star Idris Elba, but it’s a Marvel star of a different generation and still exciting nonetheless.

According to the Daily Mail which quotes an anonymous source, Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch has been pegged to take over the role of 007. The 31-year-old British actor will apparently take over James Bond’s (played by Daniel Craig) secret agent number after he leaves MI6.

The story begins with Bond retired in Jamaica but spymaster M (played by Ralph Fiennes) calls him back in desperation to tackle a new global crisis and rescue a kidnapped scientist. In true James Bond movie fashion, Bond will also be tasked to tackle a yet-unnamed nemesis, to be played by The Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek, “a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.” There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says, “Come in 007” and in walks Lashana, according to the Daily Mail’s “movie insider”.

Lynch was previously confirmed as part of the cast but was said to be playing a character named Nomi. Perhaps that was just in line with keeping everything about Bond 25 top secret, including the movie title. It’s not yet known if Lynch will be fully assuming the role of 007 in the future James Bond films or if her character will survive until the end of Bond 25, but in the upcoming instalment, Craig will remain a major part of the story.

Meanwhile, a handful of familiar faces are confirmed to make a return including Naomie Harris, Léa Seydoux Rory Kinnear and Ben Whishaw as well as a few new faces including rising star Ana de Armas, Dali Benssalah, and Billy Magnussen. Directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Bond 25 is slated to be released on 8 April 2020.
