Ah, nasi lemak. Food of the heavens. Breakfast of champions. Nourishment to the soul. We could go on, but we won’t. It’s so good that it’s arguably the national dish of Malaysia. And yet – we keep coming up with new ways to make it ‘interesting’ and ‘innovative’. Innovation is great when it comes to things like upgrading infrastructure (thank you, MRT!), improving the ergonomics of industrial design, but stahp with the nasi lemak adaptations, please.
The most recent iteration of this ‘trend’ is cheese nasi lemak. Okay, in the grand scheme of nasi lemak appropriation, this is not the most offensive, but we would argue the two still don’t really belong together.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, we suppose you could always try these:
Nasi Lemak Burger
Let’s start with baby steps – the nasi lemak burger is a friendly introduction into the world of nasi lemak appropriation as it retains a lot of the savoury features in a friendly, not too outrageous way. McDonald’s and myBurgerLab have both done successful versions of this treasured dish.
Nasi Lemak Pizza
Next up, nasi lemak pizza. It’s still not too weird; nasi lemak pizza exists within the realm of adaptations that still sound somewhat reasonable.
Nasi Lemak Sushi
It’s getting a little strange. Ruyi & Lyn are said to have done a successful version and sure, it looks quite nice but we’re not entirely convinced.
Nasi Lemak Cake
Wait, when did nasi lemak become a dessert? We’re not sure we’re comfortable with this.
Nasi Lemak Ice Cream
What do you think?
