Come 3 December 2019, Malaysia will join the biggest charitable event in the world, #GivingTuesday. MYGiving, its own iteration of the movement that comprises over 70 charities and businesses nationwide, will run for almost a week, until 8 December 2019.

MYGiving is part of the massive global effort that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organisations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Launched earlier this month, the campaign aims to raise RM320 million and lift Malaysia from 13th to within the top 10 of the Charities Aid Foundation’s World Giving Index.

Officiated by MYGiving chairperson Tunku Datin Myra Madihah, the launch was also attended by several notable Malaysian speakers from various foundations and charities, as well as radio host and television presenter Aishah Sinclair.

According to MYGiving, the movement aims to promote “an altruistic culture and prove that acts of kindness and goodwill transcend all differences. Their vision is to bring together Malaysians from all walks of life through an epic celebration of generosity. During the MYGiving week, Malaysians will donate, raise funds, give time, influence, voice skills, resources or simply perform acts of kindness.

“We can have a big impact in resolving to be kinder to each other and to our planet,” said Myra. “Together with GivingTuesday, we are all unified in driving a common mission to build a more just and generous world,” she added.

The event is also supported by SimplyGiving, an organization that helps other Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), to reach more people for the campaign. “At SimplyGiving, we are inspired everyday by ordinary people doing extraordinary things to fundraise for causes that they care deeply about,” said Chief Executive Officer, Cheryl Low.

“Technology is making it possible to power the rapid spread and adoption of causes, ideas and actions. This is the charitable day version of 11-11 online sales, except we are all in it together to do good,” Low added.

In 2018, the event’s seventh year, US$400 million was raised for causes in the United States within just a day. This year sees Malaysia as one of 60 countries that will be officially participating in #GivingTuesday.
