When Shonda Rhimes (the executive producer/screenwriter extraordinaire behind TV hits such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal) is involved in a project, there are high expectations. Now, with Bridgerton – Rhimes’ first collaboration with Netflix, the new TV period drama is causing quite a stir online as one of the most highly anticipated new releases from the streaming giant.

The series is based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling historical novel series Bridgerton Family set in Regency England. The first season of the TV series is said to be based on the first book in the eight-part series, The Duke and I.

The series follows the trials and tribulations of eight tight-knit siblings of the Bridgerton family, in particular, the eldest daughter Daphne as she navigates her way in finding a potential and suitable suitor within high society.

In a similar vein to Gossip Girl’s anonymous narrator, the whole affair is scrutinised under the watchful eye a mysterious sharp-tongued gossip columnist, Lady Whistledown (voiced by none other than Julie Andrews). Expect plenty of drama, plot twists, sublime sets and costumes and plenty of romance.

The series will be available to stream on Netflix on Christmas Day.
